Odysseus, desperate to hear their song, has his men tie plug their ears with beeswax before tying him to the mast of their ship. This allows his crew to safely navigate the straits where the Sirens are located while Odysseus can hear their song without being lured to his death.
And while the Sirens Homer described are more bird-like, we do tend to think of them more along the lines of mermaids nowadays – and this is how they appear in this high-volatility title from Habanero.

Visuals and sound effects
Few studios out there rival Habanero’s outstanding attention to detail and this reputation shines through brilliantly in Siren’s Spell. The symbols are beautifully illustrated, with high-paying symbols clearly distinguishable from the low-paying ones. This is an often underappreciated aspect of slot design, but Habenro’s visual team have hit it out of the park in this regard.
Another neglected aspect of a lot of games is sound design. Honestly, this title is sonically up there with the very best. The haunting background music perfectly complements the bassy sounds of the reels spinning. Understandably, everything sounds like it’s taking place underwater. There are also clear audio cues for when the Scatter and Wild symbols appear on the reels.
We also love the clarity with which each payline win is shown with glowing borders. This is a super helpful feature which is often absent from many popular titles. All in all, this is a class experience.
Features
As with most high-volatility games, you can expect a decent feature spread. In Siren’s Spell, you are also given the option to buy the feature – this will cost you, though. Otherwise, you can use the Super Bet feature which increases your chances of landing three scatters at the expense of doubling your stake.
Free spins
The Free Spins Feature is where you’ll coin it in Siren’s Spell. Land three Clam Scatters on the reels and you’ll unlock the free play feature along with symbol upgrades.
The symbol upgrade mechanic can ramp up your winning potential. So how does it work? You’ll notice three counters at the top of the screen during free play (see the image below). Each win on a separate payline will go toward the counter – fill a counter with 40 payline wins and you’ll get 15 more free spins and you’ll upgrade a high-paying symbol as follows:
- All Turtle symbols will be upgraded to Sharks when the Turtle counter is filled;
- All Shark symbols will be upgraded to Seahorses when the Shark counter is filled;
- All Seahorse symbols will upgrade to Jellyfish when the Seahorse counter is filled.
Remember, whenever a counter is filled you’ll be awarded 15 extra free spins. Upgrading the final Seahorse counter can unlock massive payouts with almost the Jellyfish becoming the only high-paying symbol to adorne the reels. This coupled with the expanding Wilds can lead to absolutely mad payouts.
Buy feature
Siren’s Spell offers you the chance to pay upfront for a guaranteed chance at landing the feature. This does come at a pretty hefty cost – around 50x your stake. If you’re playing for the minimum bet (25 cents), you’ll need to fork out R12.52 to buy the free spin feature. This obviously becomes exponentially more expensive as you up your stake.
Super bet
The Super Bet option is probably a bit more palatable if you’re not a big spender. This facility gives you an improved shot of landing three Scatter symbols by doubling your stake. We tested this feature and it would take between three and 20 spins before triggering.

Siren’s Spell has a pretty expansive paytable that features 10 symbols. These can broadly be broken down into two categories: high-paying and low-paying. Habanero are generally good at making it easy to distinguish between symbols that fall in either category and this title is no different.
High-paying symbols
The high-paying symbols are all framed by a golden wreath and appear on blue backgrounds. The two big ones you’re looking out for are the Siren which acts as the game’s wild and the Clam which is the scatter.

Low-paying symbols
The low-paying symbols comprise wholly of different coloured shells. These are hardly worth looking out for, with only the Yellow and Red ones paying out more than your bet amount should you land five of them on a payline.

Siren's Spell winning strategy
Everything you do in Siren’s Spell should be geared toward accessing the feature quickly and as many times as possible. You’re not likely to score any significant wins during the base game. Ideally, you should be exclusively purchasing the feature, although this can burden your float. However, this is where the game’s greatest rewards are unlocked.
This title’s mega-high volatility makes it an attractive prospect if you’re able to load up your account. If you’re a smaller player, however, you will probably burn through your limited float in no time through regular play.
